By changing the angle of the meter gauge, angled cross laps can be created. These angled cross laps allow for elegant connections in two different directions.

By playing with orientation and repetition, it allowed me to see what interactions can be made from adding more and more pieces.

I created a triangular block with the precise angle I needed and another block for a snug fit. These pieces were used to establish the perfect, consistent angle before cutting my pieces.

To ensure I could make multiples of the same exact cut, I created a spacer that helps define where the cut starts and ends. I made three spacers because each wood piece had slight, almost unnoticeable variations in width, causing each joint to differ slightly.

These are all my pieces set to go with the first cut made. I ensured that each piece was the same length before making the next cut, which will allow the pieces to become joints with each other.

After testing many different connection combinations, I finally chose to have them all come together in the same repeating pattern, creating an illusion.

Each individual piece of the connections have the same cuts on each of their same sides.

For added security and tightly fitting joints, I incorporated dowel joints by drilling holes with a drill bit slightly smaller than the dowel I used. I then sanded the dowel to match the size of the hole and fitted it in place.

I steam bent 1/4” pieces of wood to create a slight curve. This piece was used to experiment with orientation and the visual impact of the final design, playing with balance and how its positioning influences how it can be viewed.
